1 - Não se pode exigir ao primeiro-ministro que não minta. 2 - Descobri na TVI o escândalo do "climategate". Parece que o Director de um centro de investigação estrangeiro sobre o clima e outro cientista trocaram e-mails em que... Whatever! Nada disso me interessa. Interessa-me isto, o diálogo que refiro de cor:

Jornalista: Mas então, porque é que o director foi suspenso?
Entrevistado: Ele não foi suspenso, ele demitiu-se!

Os jornalistas da TVI (ou as agências por eles) tiveram acesso a e-mails privados, mas não conseguem ter acesso à carta de demissão ou conhecimento de prova empírica do acto de demissão, isso sim, de carácter público? Eu também sei fazer copy/paste... nunca me considerei jornalista.

3 - O Nuno Gomes "considera" a bola oficial do Mundial 2010 mais leve. Sim, ele "considera". Considerando a existência de balanças, deixo o problema à vossa consideração...

Quando em 2006 aprendi que, com alguma tolerância, é permitido desistir das coisas, temia que a vontade, a possibilidade de repetir o acto, quase sempre mascarado de coragem, me afrontasse mais vezes o espírito. Assim em 2008. Assim em 2009. Em 2007 não havia nada de que deixar para trás. Contudo, houve um acto de recusa que se assemelha tanto ao acto passado como aos actos futuros.

Apetece-me, pois, dizer "não dá, não consigo nem vale a pena." Apetece-me dizer "não consigo, desculpem, mas já não consigo". E dizer ainda "obrigado, mas não consigo, não vale a pena." E, aos devaneios constantes, pequenos prazeres que afastam o sono e me deixam, como que num limbo, suspenso de tudo o resto "podem ir, obrigado, já são impossíveis." Enquanto percorro mentalmente a lista de coisas a que dizer adeus ‒ a começar pelos livros da biblioteca ‒, imagino a mentira que é pensar-se numa vida mais simples à espera, no fim de tudo.

Já agora, a razão pela qual eu não posso senão fazer a tese e sair mestre é a seguinte:

Estou totalmente dependente dos meus pais e um emprego tipo call-center, mesmo se eu o quisesse, incapaz de pagar a casa e de pagar de algum modo este sofrimento pós-lincenciatura dos meus pais mantinha-me preso tal e qual preso como estou, com a agravante de tornar mais óbvia a perda do tempo e dinheiro investidos. Como também nenhum escritório se mostrou interessado em mim (e vá-se lá perceber porque é que eles me queriam antes das pós-graduações e não me querem depois) não tenho outro caminho. Também já percebi que não tenho grande jeito para isto da investigação e com jeito digo também paciência: eu não consigo ler 10 pp seguidas de um romance sem me distrair, sem ter vontade de pousar o livro... paro de ler qualquer texto académico a cada duas páginas, interrompe-se-me o pensamento com ninharias e recriminações. Quer me interesse pelo tema ou não. Às vezes, nem notícias consigo ler e, por isso, mal leio jornais. Só me resta o trabalho mecânico, trabalho mal pago e que enche de tédio mas exigirá menos concentração que ler. Ainda assim, keeping up appearances, lá vou concorrer ao CEJ: se a Justiça em Portugal está mal, se entrar, mais um mau juiz não há-de fazer muita diferença e, na verdade, a justiça particular, do caso concreto, sempre me interessou muito pouco. Deixá-los matarem-se ou morrerem. Que roubem. Tudo isso está para lá do que me interessa - que me interessa? A justiça mais global, a justiça política, vai deixando de me interessar. São apenas aborrecimentos mesquinhos, desde as fábricas asiáticas, à Birmânia, à Etiópica, aos nossos amigos americanos. Se se morre com tudo na mesma. Um casebre no meio do dada era o ideal: até me que viessem roubar e me matassem. Assim não houvesse quem se preocupasse comigo e, até lá, era aquilo que se podia ter de mais parecido com a paz, que vem depois.

Não me zango com o meu próprio entorpecimento. Para quê?

How elusive is a drink? Could have saved sunday's white for tuesday's sunset, but fish does go with white wine, my dad reminded me, and, i suppose, the tired calm of the evening, its last waves of light reflected in dark skin, goes with a bottle of champagne.
We kept quiet as a plane cruised the muted sky and the wind brushed the trees, but we kept quiet because there was nothing to celebrate. Summer came and we sat at the table, neatly put, with smoked salmon and toasted bread and I can't remeber exactly how it felt: yes, the town had been changed beyond recognition; incoherence, - not unlike my life, i thought -, had built large deserted squares. No trees, my dad added.
We ought to make time to sit and remember. To carelessly sip champagne. Or white wine poured over sliced peaches. Maybe tomorrow.

Maybe we needed more delinquency in our youth. Summer comes and we stroll along to the same beach as the year before. No thoughts like "maybe this year!", as the wind slightly breaks the warmth of the sun's welcomed rays. The cool breeze fades into a memory of something whispered, and the sea, the seagulls and sun bring a calm lust: we almost smile, for autumn is just another season, not another chance.

Maybe every little introspective mid-January entry should include a promise like this: “drink less alcohol, drink more water”. Still, after last year’s prize-winning excess, the couple of glasses of champagne I had ten days ago made me feel somewhat remiss.

Order should be restored and a friend’s birthday party seemed the right place for the reckoning. The host-consort gave us a hand, pouring glass after glass of sangria, although someone should tell him that his Tarzan-like policy of “you drink, I watch” could be grounds for a fatwa. The jury, though, was still out… and probably drunk, for I do not remember singing “happy birthday” to chairwoman Mao.

Would she not consent on such trivial, cultural reactionary endeavor? Oh the bourgeoisie must be left to its own devices, to wallow in its particular corrupted traditions. Is it still a birthday without that pathetic song? Who, then, can claim temporary insanity? I demand a recount!! A reenactment of sorts! How is it that again the world is seriously out of balance?

A CNN tem um programa chamado My City_My Life. Esta semana coube a Nina Persson, a vocalista dos Cardigans apresentar Malmö.

Muito provavelmente a Nina não escolheu os sítios que os responsáveis pelo turismo de Malmö mais gostavam que ela tivesse mostrado.

Para mim é suficiente saber que fica na escandinávia e que há um bar que disponibiliza cobertores às pessoas que queiram ir para a esplanada. Eu, que já fui para a Faculdade, no Inverno, de tshirt laranja, calças de ganga, luvas, cachecol e gorro pretos, gostei muito da ideia e sei onde se podia aplicar em Lisboa. Amanhã há euromilhões, é preciso não esquecer!

Keep on reading what you were reading? If you chose to read the said page(s) of said book of said author... how can you be sure you'll understand what the author meant out of context?

If you decide to keep on reading what you were reading, will you not forget to go and check or, more importantly, will there be a point to go to the (name, year: page) mentioned before? Won't you be reading some other relevant aspect?

I trully do not understand this. I trully fail to even grasp this sort of «academic» reading. Where I came from, you would read (Name A, year: chapter about X) followed by (Name B, year: chapter about X) followed by (Name C, year: chapter about X). And that would be that! It would be annoying. It would be like reading the same thing over and over again... but you knew what you were doing!!

If there is no method to this, must I conclude this is art? And if it is art, should I have not been told in advance?

O ano não corre mal, mas há uma situação absurda: desde que deixei de ter internet, já paguei mais por serviço mau e ocasional do que quando pagava os €29.90 por mês pelo serviço relativamente bom. Como?

Usando a net móvel dos meus pais que deve ter o consumo extra mais caro do país.
Usando o "internetnotelemóvel" da tmn, supostamente grátis durante um mês, e reparar que ao exceder os míseros 100MB que temos por mês, em menos de cinco minutos, fiquei sem os €25 que tinha de saldo. O que já me aconteceu duas vezes.

Pronto, lá se foi a poupança! E lá veio a despesa.

Not nearly enough logic there - admittedly, it sounded better in my head -, but still a valid point in a pre-bubbly state-of-mind. Indeed, we blog. We all come up with stuff. I might be the champion of randomness by now... so I put the internet and the cable out of their mediated miserary in 2008. See the logic there? I meant the intrinsic logic of trying hard not to try at all, but hope hard, instead, that Life will bestow upon me whatever it is that I might want. I make simbolic sacrifices. But lo the martyr fails yet again to hit its target.

Of all the random stuff, what's appropriate for New Year's Eve, other than happy you know what?

So happy 2009! Yes, it will be great! Obviously, it will be amazing. Comparative Politics will still be as trivial as blogging and as scientific as common sense. In keeping with tradition (yes! yes! yes!) it will provide much fodder for our every day "news" dealers, dear leaders' speeches and certified opinion-makers. A grand year, crisis notwithstanding. A critical year, I would say.

And yes, hope. Hope that I can try harder!

By now, everyone who knows me or stumbled on my blog and kept reading for more than ten seconds, knows that I was taught this little trick called speedreading. Everyone who knows me and everyone who stumbled on my blog and managed to keep reading for five seconds, knows that, though I know the theory of speedreading, I have yet to master or even grasp the technique.

As happens everytime I feel some desperation or circumstantial claustrophobia, I am reminded that I might already have the answer for my problems... if we reject the snake-oil hypothesis, that is! Faith is, indeed, everything and, although I am set on giving speedreading a go, I cannot shake this unhelpful skepticism.

Sadly, I never wanted something so much as to try hard (let alone Michael Phelps-hard) to get it. Still, I often find myself disappointed (and disappointing others) with failures that could either have been prevented or anticipated, were it not for my childish mix of optimism and laziness.

So, once more, once more, with feeling...

Era a melhor notícia que o Jornal Nacional tinha para dar a 30 de Novembro de 2008.

E já quase me esquecia do outro jovem português que descobriu que somos parecidos com os macacos. Ou será que somos cada vez mais parecidos com os macacos. Se a notícia se referia à primeira hipótese, então o prémio que o sr. ganhou era, seguramente, um prémio de ciência política!

Rather poorly, que nos primeiros dias, andar parecia ser mais um dos exercícios que o instrutor prescreve. Três vezes por semana, lá me pergunto, enquanto luto contra uma das máquinas, porque razão pago 29.90 euros para sofrer e suar e que raio de sociedade é esta em que se paga para, entre outras coisas, ter borregas nas mãos e ficar todo partido. E 29.90 euros era o que pagava por mês para ter internet em casa. Eis o preço do sedentarismo e da respectiva cura, e eu só tenho dinheiro para uma coisa.

Hoje fui correr, etc. na esperança de me deixar dormir a horas razoáveis. Corri um "Love is Noise" dos The Verve e um "The Shock of the Lightning" dos Oasis. 10 minutos! Quase 10 minutos! Há uns dias, corri um "Nobody Girl" do Ryan Adams (9 minutos). I'm getting better.

Amanhã há mais.

Also uncanny is my want for a "west wing"-kind of job and my dislike for the practical side of Law, irrespective of the branch. Das formas de tratamento em geral
Há rumores de que eu vibro... ou tintilo... com os títulos e pronomes de tratamento em geral. A minha Ex.ma pessoa vem, pois, pôr cobro a essas ideias pouco republicanas. A minha Ex.ma pessoa trata as pessoas de acordo com os costumes do sítio, seguindo o princípio de que se a tradição não prejudica, então pode ser mantida. Assim, na minha interpretação da norma consuetudinária social, há Ex.mos Senhores Professores Doutores e há Caros Professores. São Caros aqueles com os quais se fala, sejam os não doutores; são Excelentíssmos Professores Doutores aqueles com os quais raramente se trocaram palavras e tem o grau académico de Doutor. Assim, o exame oral ou a breve passagem pelos estranhos mestrados tradicionais não altera a substantivamente a situação.

Ocorre-me que há um erro no modo como as pessoas olham algumas formas de tratamento. É verdade que elas existem para criar uma barreira; mas essa barreira pode ser querida pelo menos excelente dos que dialogam. Quando um dia se fizer um estudo das minahs epístolas – e, naturalmente, há-de ser feito – notarão os meus biógrafos e outros estudiosos da minha futura Excelência que eu reservo igualmente o
Ex.mo Senhor Professor Doutor para aqueles que, podendo tratar por Caro, podiam, no que a mim me diz respeito, ir morrer longe. Em sentido figurado.

Enfim, há, igualmente, os que podiam ir morrer longe, mas para os quais o uso do Ex.mo Senhor Professor é, pelo que ficou dito uns parágrafos atrás, ridículo e absurdamente moroso. E é com tristeza que, então, escrevo Caro Professor.

Dos títulos et cetera
O único problema dos títulos reside em eu não os ter. Assim, havendo quem os tenha, eu quero tê-los também. Está a natureza do pequeno burgês e não há nada a fazer. Sim. Perpetua um certo estado de cosias. Sim. São absolutamente anacrónicos. Mas sim: eles não são meras palavras. Estou absolutamente convencido que assinar Fulano de Tal, Duque de Não Sei Onde, torna tudo mais expedido, com excepção, claro está, da própria assinatura. Assentua, também, a distância face àqueles que queremos que morram longe. Não faltando, neste mundo, hipóteses de humilhação, então que ela penda para o outro lado, para o lado do meu interlocutor.

E há qualquer coisa de estético nos títulos e nas formas de tratamento que com eles estão conexas. Atente-se na Sua Majestade Fidelíssima, coisa que não é para todos, ou Sua Alteza Sereníssima. (Aliás, ser Sereníssima é um dos atractivos da República de São Marino!) Outras “raridades” são os títulos e formas de tratamento eclesiáticos.

Pois eu quero uma dessas coisas. É que não aprecio especialmente a palavra “licenciado” nem lhe tenho grande apego, ainda que me tenha custado torná-la atributo meu.

O Estado é parte da República Helénica, Grécia para os amigos, mas tem um governo autónomo: a Santa Comunidade, que consiste em representantes dos 20 mosteiros; a Santa Administração, o órgão executivo e o Protos, o monge que preside ao executivo.

O Patriarca Bartolomeu I de Constantinopla declarou o cisma. A Santa Comunidade decidiu expulsar os monges do seu mosteiro (the only home they have known for 1500 years, diz carinhosamente o sítios dos monges do dito mosteiro). A Constituição da Grécia parece que proíbe igualmente cismas no Monte Atos, pelo que um Tribunal de Tessalónica decidiu que os monges deviam abandonar o mosteiro.

Resultado: polícias armados, cerco, proibição de entrada de alimentos e medicamentos, monges diabéticos e a morte de uns quantos... alegadamente.

Uma nota interessante: o ministro dos negócios estrangeiros da Grécia é, por inerência, o "chefe de estado" do Monte Atos. Actualmente, é uma mulher!!
